Real-time fuel price reporting starts

Real time fuel price reporting kicks off today in Tasmania after a slight delay in bringing the scheme together.

Involving an app and website, drivers can check out the best prices, with a view to increase competition, which most recently appeared lacking when prices did not fall as steeply as elsewhere in the slump produced by the pandemic.

The RACT's Stacey Pennicott has been doing the sums.

"That's now over $19.5 million since March that we think motorists have been overcharged, so that's a significant amount of money and we certainly applaud the government for implementing this new code of practice to ensure we see some change come through."

She is encouraging everyone to climb aboard the scheme, hunt down the best prices and produce meaningful change.

"We will be monitoring closely what happens from now, obviously it's in a trial period, we need to see the fuel retailers implement their prices and for motorists to actually change their buying behaviour."
