There's shock for some relatives of nursing home residents at a snap announcement that a Southern Tasmanian facility is closing down.
Elderly residents of Southern Cross Care's Mary's Grange home at Taroona were called into a meeting on Monday afternoon and given the news.
Mary's Grange will be closed down and residents are being offered another facility of their choice, as part of Southern Cross takes over BUPA's South Hobart facility.
Robbie Moore from HACSU says this news came out of the blue.
"We had no warning this was going to happen, it came out of no where and many people are in shock over this."
"It's extremely disappointing for staff and residents, the facility had some upgrades of some areas, some other areas still needed to be upgraded, and that's what the staff and residents were wanting to see. There has been a lot disappointment since the announcement."
"We haven't been told of a timeline at this stage, there are obviously issues we need to work through to ensure that residents are provided with a new home and to ensure staff have ongoing employment," he said.
