Ed Sheeran Says He’s ‘Done’ If He Loses Copyright Lawsuit

Ed Sheeran is currently being sued because of a potential copyright infringement where the claims are that ‘Thinking Out Loud’ has ripped off Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get it on’.

The trial reconvened this week, as Sheeran spent his fifth day in the court room, where he is being sued for an alleged copyright infringement over his 2014 hit single ‘Thinking Out Loud’.

According to PEOPLE, the trial was started by Structured Asset Sales, who in 2018 purchased a third of the shares of ‘Let’s Get it on’ from the family of Ed Townsend, who co-wrote “Let’s Get It On” with Marvin Gaye. The copyright claim alleges that Sheeran’s 2014 hit took elements directly from ‘Let’s Get it on’.

Sheeran took the stand during the hearing, where he was posed the question by his lawyer “what would he do if the court finds ‘Thinking Out Loud’ to be too similar to ‘Let’s Get It On’?”

“If that happens, I’m done, I’m stopping,” Sheeran said.

“I find it to be really insulting,” he added. “I work really hard to be where I’m at.”

Sheeran was later questioned by the plaintiff’s lawyer and according to PEOPLE Ed gave “some stern responses.”

“You’re trying to diminish my success,” he said. “‘Thinking Out Loud’ was my first Grammy.”

Sheeran’s co-writer for “Thinking Out Loud” Amy Wage also took the stand and explained to the court that the hit song’s tune sounds more like ‘Have I Told You Lately’ by Van Morrison as they share the same chords but in a different key.

She also explained to the court how she felt about being accused of copying, “It was pretty devastating and pretty frightening because it’s something we did not do,” said Wage.
